Well somebody say something
Random thoughts as a senior software engineer
Like any average superhero, I also live two different lives: one by day and one by night. While photography is my true passion, it doesn't pay the bills or offer good insurance. So, for the past 21 years, I've pretended to be a software engineer. In reality, 90% of what I do is attend meetings, summarize when things get too complicated for everyone, do traffic control, put out fires, and a tiny bit of coding sprinkled in.
So I had a fun one today, this oddly happens a lot:
Someone brings up whether we should cancel a regularly planned meeting. You get a whole string of messages from everyone saying they have nothing to talk about, but then nobody actually says the meeting is canceled. It just kind of dangles there for 20 minutes until the meeting is supposed to start. Like, are we having the meeting or aren't we? 🤷
Fine… I get out my Very Expensive Wizard's Magic Software Staff of Power and post in the chat: “No meeting today.” Then I get twelve thumbs up from everyone and move on to the next crisis.
To be clear, I am not in charge, I do not own this meeting, but somebody has to keep the ball rolling… I feel like a dung beetle 🤦
