Northern Lights: Naked Eye vs Camera View

While the human eye has the ability so see amazing contrast and detail, they aren’t the best at night. Many people struggled to see the northern lights from the city without the aid of their cameras/phones. With a camera sensor allowing the collection of light over time, it’s able to absorb light and details we can’t always see in the dark. After a fun evening of capturing the aurora borealis event and getting some amazing photos I wanted to try and re-create what I was able to see that night vs what the camera captured.

The LEFT photo I tried to remember and approximate what I could actually see in the sky through editing. A small tint of color, some shapes, but mostly a haze.

The RIGHT photo is what the camera saw, enhanced to reveal the details and draw out the colors hidden in the darkness. This was done with post-capture processing editing techniques. It’s truly amazing what a long exposure can capture at night on a camera.
